What if I Live?

September 3 & 4, 2022

Primary Text:  Philippians 1:20-24:

Previous Teaching:  What if the Bell Tolls?

1)  The Fear of Death

Hebrews 2:14-15:  Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil--and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

DQ 1) What causes fear of death?  Why does death “sting”?

2)  To Die is Gain

Philippians 1:20-24:  I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.  For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.  If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me.  Yet what shall I choose?  I do not know!  I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.

DQ 2) What is to be gained by dying?

DQ 3) What will occur at the “judgment seat of Christ”?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  To Live is Christ!

DQ 1) What does it mean to live?

2)  Abundant Life

John 10:10:  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

John 10:10 (NASB):  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

DQ 2) Define abundant life.

3)  The Greatness of Knowing

Philippians 3:7-11:  But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.  What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.  I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

DQ 3) What does it mean to know Christ?

DQ 4) How does an individual increase in knowledge of Christ?

4)  Crucified with Christ

Galatians 2:20:  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

DQ 5) How have believers in Jesus been crucified with Him yet

           still live bodily?
