John 1:1-44 The Story of Lazarus
1. Crisis: Lazarus Becomes ILL (John 11:1-6)
Word reached Jesus that Lazarus was gravely ill. Trusting in His power, Mary and Martha sent for Him. Jesus responded that “this sickness will not end in death,” but would bring glory to God and His Son. Despite the urgency, He waited two days before leaving.
Lesson: God’s timing often differs from human expectations; delays may serve a greater purpose.

2. The Journey to Bethany (John 11:7-16)
After waiting, Jesus told His disciples they would return to Judea, despite their fears for His safety. He explained that Lazarus had died and was grateful for the opportunity to strengthen the disciples’ faith.
Lesson: Difficult situations can foster spiritual growth and deeper faith.

3. The Mourning of Mary and Martha (John 11:17–37)
When Jesus arrived, Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days—a period that made death certain in Jewish custom. Martha approached Jesus with both sorrow and faith. Jesus responded, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Mary, deeply moved, also came to Him, and Jesus Himself wept with compassion.
Lesson: Jesus shows genuine empathy for human suffering and calls for personal trust in Him.

4. The Miracle: Lazarus Raised (John 11:38–44)
At the tomb, Jesus commanded the stone to be rolled away. After Martha’s brief objection, He reassured her of the promise of faith. Jesus prayed, then called Lazarus out, and Lazarus emerged still wrapped in burial clothes.
Lesson: God’s power can change even the most hopeless situations.
