Grow Up!

Patience & Kindness

February 8 & 9, 2025

Primary Text:  1 Corinthians 13:4

Last Teaching:  Grow Up! – Courage

1)  Courage to Endure

Hebrews 12:1-3:  Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

2)  Good Courage

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV):  Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psalm 27:14 (NASB):  Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.

3)  Good Cheer

Mark 6:49-50 (NKJV):  And when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed it was a ghost, and cried out; for they all saw Him and were troubled.  But immediately He talked with them and said to them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

This Week’s Teaching:

1)  Forbearance

1 Corinthians 13:4:  Love is patient, love is kind.

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV84):  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV):  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

DQ 1) Define patience, forbearance, and longsuffering.

1 Corinthians 13:4:  Love is patient, love is kind.

Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV):  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

3)  Utmost Patience

Exodus 34:6-7:  And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.”

2 Peter 3:8-10:  But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.  The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.  But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Romans 2:3-4:  So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?  Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?

DQ 3) Why is God patient with fickle, sinful humans?

4)  Patient With Everyone

1 Thessalonians 5:14-15:  And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.  Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

Colossians 1:10–12:  And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

DQ 4) How patient are you in general?

DQ 5) What things really test your patience?  Why?
