A True Church

Primary Text: 1 John 5:2-4 June 6 & 7, 2020

1) His Church -

* Matthew 16:16-18: Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

  • DQ 1) Define “The True Church.” How is it different from what is often called “church” in our world?

2) Characteristics of a True Church -

* Ephesians 5:25-27: Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

3) True Love of God -

* John 14:15: If you love me, you will obey what I command.

* Luke 6:46: Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

* 1 John 5:2-4: This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world.

* 1 John 1:6: If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

* John 21:17: The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.

  • DQ 4) What does loving God look like in the life of a Spirit-filled Christian?
