A Crisis of Truth

February 25 & 26, 2023

Primary Text: John 18:37-38

Previous Teaching: Confronting the Chaos

1)  Woe Unto Thee

Isaiah 5:20-21:  Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.  Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

DQ 1) Define evil.  Define good.  How is it possible to know either one?

DQ 2) Identify ways in which the current culture calls evil good.

2)  Rend the Heavens

Isaiah 64:1:  Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!

DQ 3) Are you prepared to meet Jesus the Christ on earth or in heaven?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  Salt & Light

Matthew 5:13-16:  You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.  You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

DQ 1) What does it mean that Christians are the “salt of the earth”?

DQ 2) What does it mean that Christians are the “light of the world”?

2)  Truth?

John 18:37-38:  "You are a king, then!" said Pilate.  Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king.  In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."  "What is truth?" Pilate asked.

DQ 3) Define truth.  On what basis did you determine that definition?

3)  The Spirit of Truth

John 14:6:  Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me."

John 14:16-17:  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- the Spirit of truth.  The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.  But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

John 15:26:  When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

John 16:13:  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.

DQ 4) What does it mean that Jesus is the truth?

DQ 5) What does it mean that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth?
