Humility

February 23, 202

Primary Text:  1 Peter 5:5-6

This Week’s Teaching:

1)  Holy People

Colossians 3:12, 15:  Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience….  Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.

Ephesians 4:1-3:  As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.  Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.  Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

DQ 1) What is humility?

DQ 2) How is humility related to kindness, patience, and peace?_________________________________________________________________________________________

2)  Love is Not

1 Corinthians 13:4-5:  Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

DQ 3) What is the root cause of envy, boastfulness, jealousy, and rudeness?

3)  Grace to the Humble

Proverbs 3:33-34:  The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.  He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble.

Psalm 25:9:  He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.

Proverbs 11:2:  When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 22:4:  Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life.

DQ 4) How does human pride serve as a roadblock to God’s grace?

DQ 5) What does it mean to have a “teachable spirit”?

4)  True Humility

Colossians 2:20-23:  Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules….  Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Luke 14:11:  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

1 Peter 5:5-6:  All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

DQ 6) What is false humility?

DQ 7) How do you “clothe yourself with humility?”

5)  The Same As Christ

Philippians 2:5-8:  Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.  And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Micah 6:8:  He has showed you, O man, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

DQ 8) Explain how Christ humbled Himself as an obedient servant.

DQ 9) Do you have an attitude of humility?  How do you know?
