Sexual Clarity

Confronting the Chaos Series

July 8 & 9, 2023

Primary Text: Hebrews 13:4

Last Teaching: Marital Chaos

1)  Husband & Wife

Genesis 2:24-25:  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.  The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

DQ 1)  Define marriage.  Define husband.  Define wife.

2)  Submission & Sacrifice

Ephesians 5:22-27:  Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.  Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

DQ 2)  What do submission and sacrifice look like in a healthy marriage?

This Week’s Teaching:

1)  Intended for Marriage

Genesis 1:28:  God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.  Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

1 Corinthians 7:1-7:  Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to marry.”  But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.  The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.  The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband.  In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.  Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer.  Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.  I say this as a concession, not as a command.  I wish that all men were as I am.  But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

DQ 1)  How are marital sexual relations intended by God to be a blessing to couples?

2)  Your Fountain Only

Proverbs 5:18-23:  May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.  A loving doe, a graceful deer--may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love.  Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress?  Why embrace the bosom of another man's wife?  For a man's ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all his paths.  The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast.  He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly.

DQ 2)  How do you “rejoice” in your spouse?

DQ 3)  What are the dangers of adultery?

3)  Sacred & Honored

Hebrews 13:4:  Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral

Hebrews 13:4 (NASB):  Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

DQ 4)  How is the marriage bed kept pure?

4)  Against Yourself

1 Corinthians 6:18-20:  Flee from sexual immorality.  All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body.

DQ 5)  How are sexual sins more injurious than other types of sins?
