This Week’s Teaching:
1) Gifts from the Lord
Psalm 127:3-5 (NASB): Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate.
DQ 1) In what ways are children gifts from the Lord?
DQ 2) What do we learn about God (and about ourselves) through parenting?

2) Modeling
Deuteronomy 6:4-9: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
DQ 3) Why is the ‘example’ of your life the most important part of parenting?

3) Balanced Parenting
Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Ephesians 6:4: Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.1 Timothy 3:1-5: Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task…. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church?)
DQ 4) How do parents “train up a child in the way he should go”?
DQ 5) How do parents ‘exasperate’ children?

4) Honor Authority
Deuteronomy 5:16: Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Proverbs 6:20: My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.
Colossians 3:20: Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Ephesians 6:1-4: Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise--"that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."
DQ 6) What does it mean to honor your parents?
DQ 7) What does honoring your parents look like when you are 5 years old… 15 years old… 25 years old…
45 years old… 65 years old… 85 years old?
