1)  Image & Likeness

Genesis 1:26:  Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 

DQ 1)  What does it mean that humans are created in the “image” and “likeness” of God?

2)  Male & Female

Genesis 1:27:  So God created man in his own image, in 

the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.  

DQ 2)  What are the created distinctions between male and female? 

DQ 3)  What is the cultural argument that separates biological sex from gender?  What are its assumptions? What are its flaws?

This Week’s Teaching: 

1)  One Flesh

Matthew 19:4-6:  "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?  So they are no longer two, but one.  Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Genesis 2:18, 22-25:  The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone.  I will make a helper suitable for him."…  Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.  The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man."  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.  The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. 

DQ 1) What are the facets of a husband and wife becoming one?

2)  A Mystery

Ephesians 5:31-32:  "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."  This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. 

DQ 2)  What is the “mystery” of marriage as it relates to Christ and the church?

3)  Fruitfulness

Genesis 1:28:  God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.  Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 

DQ 3)  Define “fruitfulness” per the directive of Genesis 1:28.

DQ 4)  What “attacks” against the family have taken place over the last 70 years?
