The Gift of the Holy Spirit

April 6 & 7, 2024

Primary Text: Luke 11:9-13

1)  Omnipresence

Psalms 139:7-8:  Where can I go from your Spirit?  Where can I flee from your presence?  If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

John 16:7–11:  Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.  When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

2 Corinthians 13:14:  May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

DQ 1) How does the Holy Spirit “convict the world of guilt”?

2)  The Gift

Luke 11:9-13:  “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.  Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?  Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

DQ 2) Why is the Holy Spirit among the greatest gifts of God to human beings?

3)  Baptized

1 Corinthians 12:13:  For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Ephesians 4:30:  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

DQ 3) How does the Holy Spirit seal us into the Body of Christ?

4)  Filled

Ephesians 5:18:  Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Acts 4:8–11:  Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!  If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.  He is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.’”

DQ 4) What does it mean to be “filled with the Holy Spirit”?

DQ 5) What inhibits the infilling of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life?
