Last Week’s Teaching: By Faith
1) Live by Faith
Romans 1:17: For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." (Habakkuk 2:4)
DQ 1) Define faith.
DQ 2) What does it mean to live by faith? What does it look like practically?

2) Active Faith
James 2:14-22: What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?... In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
DQ 3) What type of faith is essentially dead when it is not accompanied by action?
DQ 4) How can James 2:17 be compatible with Ephesians 2:8-9?

3) Our Refuge!
Psalm 46:1-3, 10-11: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging…. "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
DQ 5) How can we take refuge in God during these challenging times?

This Week’s Teaching:
1) Rejecting the True King
1 Samuel 8:4-9: So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, "You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have." But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us," this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD. And the LORD told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do."
DQ 1) Why do people want a human king?
DQ 2) How have kings in most of history treated their people?

2) The Future King
Zechariah 9:9-10: Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
DQ 3) What type of king did the Israelites want and expect in the Messiah?
DQ 4) What type of king was Jesus while on Earth before the crucifixion?

3) Rejected of Men
Isaiah 53:2-5: He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Mark 15:2, 17-26: "Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied…. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him…. It was the third hour when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
John 1:10-11: He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
DQ 5) Why did Jesus acknowledge to Pilate that He was the King of the Jews?
DQ 6) Why did the Chief Priests want Jesus killed?

4) King of All
Matthew 28:18-20: Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
DQ 7) Identify scriptures that indicate Jesus is the absolute authority over all creation.
DQ 8) Why do people not recognize and submit to Jesus as King?

5) The Ultimate King
Revelation 19:11, 16: I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.… On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
DQ 9) What does the name KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS mean?
DQ 10) Have you submitted to Jesus as King of Kings?
