Nothing Good

Primary Text:  2 Timothy 3:1-3  

This Week’s Teaching:  

1)  Anti-Good

2 Timothy 3:1-4:  But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. 

 DQ 1) Define what it means to be unholy.

 2)  Unholy

Colossians 3:5-10:  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.  Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.  But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.  Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 

1 Peter 1:13-16:  Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." 

DQ 2) What are characteristics of those who are unholy?

3)  Opposed to Good

1 Chronicles 16:34:  Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. 

Psalm 34:8:  Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. 

Nahum 1:7:  The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. 

Philippians 4:8:  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
