Proclaiming the Truth

Primary Text:  John 14:5-9

 This Week’s Teaching

1)  Truth?

John 18:37-38:  "You are a king, then!" said Pilate.  Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king.  In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."  "What is truth?" Pilate asked.

DQ 1) Define truth.

DQ 2) Why is knowing what is true so foundationally important to human life?

2)  The Living Truth

John 1:17-18:  For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.  No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

John 14:5-9:  Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"  Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.   If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well.  From now on, you do know him and have seen him."…  Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.

DQ 3) When Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life"  what was He declaring?

3)  One Who Speaks Truth

Matthew 5:17-18:  Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

DQ 4) How does your view of truth shape how you live?

4)  The Revealed Truth

Romans 1:18-20:  The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

DQ 5) Why do the spirits of evil want to replace truth with lies?

DQ 6) Why is truth the central battleground of post-modern  society?

5)  Teach Me

John 16:13-14:  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

DQ 7) How does the Holy Spirit work to impart truth to each believer?
