The Story of John Mark

“When God Isn’t Finished With You”
May 9 & 10, 2026

Primary Text: Acts 12 & 13:

INTRODUCTION:

THE UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCE OF FAILURE

Every person who has ever followed God seriously has faced this moment:

Failure in Christian life is uniquely painful—not just because we failed, but because we failed God… or at least that’s how it feels. Most churches celebrate calling. Few talk honestly about collapseEven fewer teach clearly about coming back. But Scripture does.

MARK’S PRIVILEGED BEGINNING

(Acts 12)

John Mark did not begin on the margins. He began near the center. Acts 12:12 tells us: “Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark… many were gathered together and were praying.”

Principle: Strong beginnings do not guarantee a strong finish.

THE REALITY OF MINISTRY PRESSURE

(Acts 13)

We often read Acts too quickly. By the time they reach Perga in Pamphylia, they are no longer green missionaries. They are battle-tested.

And then… “John left them and returned to Jerusalem.” (Acts 13:13)

No explanation. No footnote. Just a departure.

THE LONG SILENCE OF OBEDIENCE

Scripture gives us years of silence about Mark. That silence is not emptiness. It is formation.

B. The Hard Spiritual Work After Failure

PAUL’S SURPRISING REVERSAL

(2 Timothy 4:11)

Years later, Scripture speaks again. Statement That Changes Everything

2 Timothy 4:11—Paul’s final letter, written near death - “Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.”
