What If?

March 26 & 27, 2022

Primary Text:  Mark 8:33-36

Previous Teaching:  Begin Again Within

1)  What is Ministry?

Romans 15:15-16:  I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

DQ 1) What was the ministry of the Paul (the author of the Book Romans)?

2)  The Ministry of Service

1 Timothy 3:8-10:  Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.  They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.  They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

DQ 2) What is a Deacon?

3)  Serving Ministry

Acts 6:2-7:  So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.  Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom….  They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.  So the word of God spread.

DQ 3) Is there a hierarchy of service roles in the church?  Why or why not?

This Week’s Teachings

1)  The Cost

Mark 8:34-35:  Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it."

DQ 1) What does it mean to deny yourself to follow Christ?

2)  What Good?

Mark 8:36-37:  What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?  Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

DQ 2) What would it mean for any individual to gain the whole world?

DQ 3) How could “gaining the whole world” cause a person to forfeit his or her soul?

3)  Human Works

Matthew 7:21-23:  "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'  Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you.  Away from me, you evildoers!'"

DQ 4) What if you are following the wrong path in life?  What are the consequences?

4)  Worldly Thinking

Matthew 16:21-23:  From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.  Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.  "Never, Lord!" he said.  "This shall never happen to you!"  Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! Y ou are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

DQ 5) What if your thinking is merely human rather than the “mind of Christ” (see 1 Corinthians 2:16)?  What are the potential downfalls?
