What If It Never Happened?

April 16 & 17, 2022

Primary Text:  1 Corinthians 15:12-22

1)  No Resurrection?

Acts 23:6-9:  Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. I stand on trial because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead."  When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.  (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.)  There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued vigorously. "We find nothing wrong with this man," they said.

DQ 1) What were the similarities and differences between the Sadducees and Pharisees?

DQ 2) How important is the resurrection of Jesus to Christian theology?

2)  If There is No Resurrection

1 Corinthians 15:12-16:  But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?  If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.  And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.  More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead.  But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised.  For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.

DQ 3) If there is no resurrection of Jesus, is Christianity a meaningless religion?

3)  Hopeless and Aimless

1 Corinthians 15:17-19:  And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.  Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.  If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.

DQ 4) Why would faith in Christ be demoralizing if Jesus was not raised from the dead?

4)  The Eternal Hope!

1 Corinthians 15:20-22:  But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.  For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

DQ 5) What is the Biblical evidence of the resurrection?

DQ 6) How does the Holy Spirit testify about the resurrection of Jesus?

DQ 7) What does it mean to live “in the power of the resurrection”?
