What If it Hurts?

July 9 & 10, 2022

Primary Text:  Matthew 16:21-27

Previous Teaching:  What If I’m Lost?

1)  To Seek and Save

Luke 19:9-10:  Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."

DQ 1) What did Jesus come to seek and save?

2)  Lost but Aware

Psalm 119:173-176:  May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.  I long for your salvation, O LORD, and your law is my delight.  Let me live that I may praise you, and may your laws sustain me.  I have strayed like a lost sheep.  Seek your servant, for I have not forgotten your commands.

DQ 2) What should I do if I realize I’ve gone astray and lost my footing?

3)  Home but Still Lost

Jeremiah 50:6:  My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray and caused them to roam on the mountains.  They wandered over mountain and hill and forgot their own resting place.

DQ 3) In what ways does God always shepherd His sheep?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  Suffer Many Things

Matthew 16:21-23:  From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.  Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.  "Never, Lord!" he said.  "This shall never happen to you!"  Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan!  You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

DQ 1) What is the ‘ultimate good’ in post-modern, secular society?  How

is it in opposition to what is best in the kingdom of God?

2)  A Personal Cross

Matthew 16:24-27:  Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.  What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?  Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?  For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done."

DQ 2) How is meaning in life found through self-denial and self-

           sacrifice?

3)  Overwhelmed with Sorrow

Matthew 26:36-38:  Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."  He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.  Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.  Stay here and keep watch with me."

DQ 3) Has your soul ever been “overwhelmed with sorrow”?  When?

           Why?

DQ 4) Can doing the perfect will of God involve sorrow, anguish, and

           strife?  Why?

4)  Not My Will

Matthew 26:39:  Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.  Yet not as I will, but as you will."

DQ 5) How does surrendering your will produce what is best in the

           kingdom of God?
