Living Water

November 12 & 13, 2022

Primary Text:  John 7:37-39

Previous Teaching:  A Thirsty Soul

1)  Never Thirst

John 4:13-15:  Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."  The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."

DQ 1) Jesus speaks of two different types of thirst in John 4:13.  What are they?

DQ 2) What is the thirst of your soul?

2)  The Spring

Jeremiah 2:13:  "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."

DQ 3) What is “living water”?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  Rightful Thirst

Psalm 42:1-3:  As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?  My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"

Psalm 63:1-4:  O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.  I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.  Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.  I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.

Matthew 5:6:  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

DQ 1) What does it mean for your soul to thirst for the Living God?

2)  Streams of Living Water

John 7:37-39:  On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."  By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.  Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

DQ 2) What is the “thirst” mentioned in John 7:37?

DQ 3) What is the “living water” mentioned in John 7:38?

3)  On That Day

Zechariah 14:2-9:  I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.  Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.  Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle.  On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.  You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel.  You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah.  Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.  On that day there will be no light, no cold or frost.  It will be a unique day, without daytime or nighttime--a day known to the LORD.  When evening comes, there will be light.  On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea and half to the western sea, in summer and in winter.  The LORD will be king over the whole earth.  On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.

DQ 4) What is the source of the flow of living water in Zechariah 14:8?

What is the living water’s purpose?

4)  Eternal Flow

Revelation 7:13-17:  Then one of the elders asked me, "These in white robes--who are they, and where did they come from?"  I answered, "Sir, you know."  And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.  Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst.  The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat.  For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water.  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

DQ 5) What are the “springs of living water” in heaven?  What will they

            provide?
