Primary Text:  John 8:23-29

Previous Teaching:  The Bread of Life

1)  The Bread of Life

John 6:33-35:  "For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."  "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread."  Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life.  He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."

DQ 1) What does the Scripture mean when it says Jesus is the “bread of life”?

DQ 2) What is the spiritual distinction between “living water” and “bread of life”?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  I Want to Know Him

1 Corinthians 2:1-2:  When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.  For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Philippians 3:10-11:  I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

DQ 1) What does it mean to “know” Christ Jesus?

2)  I AM He

John 18:3-8:  So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees.  They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.  Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?"  "Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said.  (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)  When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.  Again he asked them, "Who is it you want?"  And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."  "I told you that I am he," Jesus answered.

DQ 2) People are looking for answers and hope, so why do many not recognize Jesus the Messiah?  Worse yet, why are many people hostile toward Jesus and the truth?

3)  I AM the One

John 8:23-24:  But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above.  You are of this world; I am not of this world.  I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins."

John 8:27-30:  They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.  So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.  The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."  Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him.

John 8:58-59:  "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"  At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

DQ 3) Who did Jesus claim to be in John 8?
