Belonging to the Holy Spirit

February 4 & 5, 2023

Primary Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

Previous Teaching: Belonging to Jesus

1)  An Old Testament Church

Romans 3:19-20:  Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.  Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

DQ 1) What was the primary purpose of the Old Testament Law?

2)  Friends of God

John 15:12-16:  My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last.

DQ 2) What does it mean to be a friend of God rather than only a servant?

DQ 3) Are you a friend of God?  Do you belong to Him?

This Week’s Teaching

  1. The Gift of the Spirit

Acts 1:4-5:  On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."

Acts 2:38:  Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Romans 8:9:  You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.  And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

Ephesians 1:13-14:  And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.  Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

DQ 1) What are the differences between being baptized by water and being baptized by the Holy Spirit?

DQ 2) What does it mean to be “sealed by the Holy Spirit”?

2)  Baptized by the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:12-13:  The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.  For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Ephesians 5:18:  Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

DQ 3) What does it mean to be “filled with the Spirit”?

3)  Grieve Not

Ephesians 4:30:  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

DQ 4) What does it mean to “grieve the Holy Spirit”?

4)  Quench Not

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 (NASB):  Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances.  But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.

DQ 5) What does it mean to “quench the Holy Spirit”?
