Confronting the Chaos Series

March 25 & 26, 2023

Primary Text: Psalm 10:4

Previous Teaching: Moral Order

1)  The Law of Moses

Deuteronomy 27:9-10:  Then Moses and the priests, who are Levites, said to all Israel, "Be silent, O Israel, and listen!  You have now become the people of the LORD your God.  Obey the LORD your God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today."

DQ 1) What is the moral law of God?  What is its ultimate origin?

DQ 2) Can human societies exist apart from the moral law of God?  Why?

2)  Upon Their Hearts

Romans 2:14-15:  Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.

DQ 3) What evidence exists that the moral law of God is written on all human hearts?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  Haughty Denial

Psalm 10:4 (NASB):  The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him.  All his thoughts are, "There is no God."

Psalm 53:1 (NASB):  The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God," They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; There is no one who does good.

DQ 1) Is atheism a rational deduction?

2)  Denying the Creator

Romans 1:25:  They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

DQ 2) Why do human beings deny the Creator?  Is it because of a lack of evidence?

3)  Denying Truth

2 Peter 2:1-3:  But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you.  They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.  Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.  In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up.

DQ 3) Why do people deny the existence of eternal, ultimate truth?

4)  Denying Morality

Romans 8:6-8:  The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.  Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

DQ 4) Why do sinful humans deny the existence of transcendent moral absolutes?

5)  “Wisdom” of the Wise

1 Corinthians 1:18-20:  For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."  Where is the wise man?  Where is the scholar?  Where is the philosopher of this age?  Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

DQ 5) How is denial of God, truth, and morality inherently contradictory?
