The Goodness of God

January 21 & 22, 2023

Primary Text: Psalm 34:6-10

Previous Teaching: Belong Again

1)  Meant for Relationships

Matthew 22:35-40:  One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"  Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

DQ 1) How would you describe your relationship with Jesus?  Is it healthy and vibrant, stagnant, damaged, or non-existent?

DQ 2) Are your relationships with other people generally healthy?  Are there any relationships that need healing and restoration?

2)  Dangers of Isolation

Proverbs 18:1 (NASB):  He who separates himself seeks his own desire, He quarrels against all sound wisdom.

DQ 3) What is the difference between being alone and being isolated?

DQ 4) What are the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical dangers of isolation?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  A Good God

Psalm 34:6-10:  This poor man called, and the LORD heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.  The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.  Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.  Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.  The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

DQ 1) What is goodness--particularly as it relates to being a fruit of the Spirit?

DQ 2) What does it mean that the “Lord is good”?

2)  The Land of the Living

Psalm 27:13-14:  I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.  Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

DQ 3) Identify ways in which the goodness of God has impacted your life?

3)  Families for the Lonely

Psalm 68:5-6:  A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.  God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

DQ 4) What constitutes a family?

DQ 5) What are the differences between biological, cultural, and spiritual families?

4)  Perfect Gifts

James 1:16-17:  Don't be deceived, my dear brothers.  Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

DQ 6) What are the perfect gifts of God that are available to all people?

DQ 7) What are the good gifts God has specifically given you?
