Last Week’s Teaching: By My Spirit
1) Not by Might
Zechariah 4:6: So he [the angel of the Lord] said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty."
DQ 1) What was Zerubbabel’s mission? How was it completed?
2) Power From On High
Luke 24:49: I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
John 14:16-20: And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--the Spirit of truth…. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
DQ 2) What does John 14:20 mean when it says Jesus is in the Father, we are in Jesus, and Christ is in us?
3) Filled with the Spirit
Acts 2:1, 16-18: When the day of Pentecost came…. No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy."
DQ 3) What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
This Week’s Teaching
1) Different Kinds
1 Corinthians 12:1-6: Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.
DQ 1) Define “spiritual gifts.” Make sure your definition is not too narrow.
2) The Common Good
1 Corinthians 12:7-11: Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
DQ 2) What is the “common good” referred to into 1 Corinthians 12:7?
3) One Body
1 Corinthians 12:12-14: The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Now the body is not made up of one part but of many.
DQ 3) What does it mean that “we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body”?
4) Eagerly Desire
1 Corinthians 12:27-31: Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts.
1 Corinthians 14:1: Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
DQ 4) Why should we eagerly desire spiritual gifts?
5) Good Gifts
Luke 11:9-13: "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
DQ 5) Are you regularly asking God to fill you with the Holy Spirit?
