Aspiring to Holiness

 Primary Text:  1 Peter 2:9-12                                   June 27 & 28, 2020

Last Week’s Teaching:  A Rightful Fear

 1)  Proper Fear

Acts 9:31:  Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace.  It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.

DQ 1) What does it mean to live in the fear of the Lord?

2)  Swift Punishment

Acts 5:3-11:  Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?...  You have not lied to men but to God."  When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died….  Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

DQ 2) What does it mean to test the Spirit of the Lord?

3)  Fear Him

Luke 12:4-5:  I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.   But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell.  Yes, I tell you, fear him.

DQ 3) Why is it healthy to fear the judgment of God?

4)  What Does He Ask?

Deuteronomy 10:12-20:  And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?...  Fear the LORD your God and serve him.

DQ 4) What conditions of the human soul arise if a person does not fear God?

This Week’s Teaching

1)  A Holy Nation

1 Peter 2:9:  But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

DQ 1) Define the “holy nation” mentioned in 1 Peter 2:9.

2)  Made Holy

Hebrews 10:10:  And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11:  Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God?...  But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Titus 3:5-7:  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

DQ 2) How are humans made holy by Christ?

 3)  Live Holy

1 Peter 2:11-12:  Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20:   Flee from sexual immorality.  All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body.

Hebrews 12:14:  Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

DQ 3) What sinful desires have you already overcome?

DQ 4) What sinful desires do you still struggle to overcome?  Why?

 4)  Like Him

1 Peter 1:14-17:  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.   But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."  Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.

DQ 5) How does reverent fear of God lead to holy living?  Why?
