Brevity

Primary Text: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 May 17, 2020

1) Brevity of Life -

* Genesis 3:22: And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."

* James 4:14: Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

* Psalm 144:4: Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.

  • DQ 1) Why do humans live as if life on the earth is eternal?

2) Set Limits -

* Job 14:5: Man's days are determined; you have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.

* Psalm 90:10: The length of our days is seventy years--or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

* Psalm 139:15-16: When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

  • DQ 2) Does God give humans any influence over the length of our days?

3) Brevity of Seasons -

* Ecclesiastes 3:1-8: There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

  • DQ 3) What are the major seasons of life? How quickly do the seasons of life change?

4) Brevity of Opportunities -

* John 11:25-26: Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

* Hebrews 4:1-2: Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

  • DQ 4) What are examples of windows of opportunities that appear in our lives only for short seasons?

5) In a Flash -

* 1 Corinthians 15:51-55: Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed--in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

  • DQ 5) Do you live with an awareness of the brevity of life, taking advantage of the opportunities God sets before you?
